WASHINGTON: The White House said on Tuesday that an accord signed by President Zardari putting part of the country under Islamic law in a bid to combat the Taliban went against human rights and democracy.
White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said that the Obama administration believed that “solutions involving security in Pakistan don’t include less democracy and less human rights.” “The signing of that denoting strict Islamic law in the Swat valley goes against both of those principles. We are disappointed parliament did not take into account legitimate concerns around civil and human rights,” he said.
Meanwhile, State Department spokesman Robert Wood on Tuesday said the United States would make a pledge to support Pakistan’s economic development at later this week’s Friends of Democratic Pakistan conference in Tokyo but did not reveal any specific details. “We will be making a pledge at the donors’ conference, but I am not going to go beyond that at this point,” Wood said at the daily briefing.
