PESHAWAR: Taliban militants Friday kidnapped 10 paramilitary soldiers from their local headquarters in a northwest Pakistan town bordering the troubled Swat valley, police said.
The abduction took place in the town of Dir, in the Upper Dir district of Malakand — where the military this week launched an offensive against Taliban in Lower Dir and Buner districts.
Up to 60 Taliban militants stormed the local paramilitary headquarters and snatched 10 personnel around 1:00 am, Dir police chief Ijaz Ahmed told AFP.
There were only a few personnel at the headquarters because most were deployed in the field, Ahmed said.
Atiq-ur-Rehman, head of the district administration in Upper Dir, confirmed that more than 50 armed militants attacked the local Dir Levies paramilitary headquarters and abducted 10 personnel.
In Buner, militants earlier this week captured police stations in three villages and have been holding hostage 52 police officers and paramilitary soldiers in the district, the military has said.
