I was shocked and disgusted to see bearded extremists whip a young girl in Swat -- as shown on Geo TV. I watched with horror and revulsion and also because no one in the crowd of onlookers dared stop them. The establishment should be proud of these antics, because after all these are their 'strategic assets'. They are the brainchild of people like General Zia and General Hameed Gul. At the risk of sounding impudent, I would say that people like these -- only the second general is still alive -- should instead be lashed in public, for creating such monsters.

Each whip by the fanatic religious custodian that struck a young girl in front of hundreds of onlookers in Swat was like a lash on the faces of the chief minister of NWFP, the prime minister, the president, the legislators and most importantly on the face of every civilised Pakistani. After the punishment, the 'brave Talib' called the apparent guardian of the girl a 'bharwa'. If that Pakhtun had a sense of pride he would have turned back, taken the gun out and shot the lasher through his head. All I can say is that, that day religious grace and Pakhtun pride both were put on a disgraceful sale.

I was thoroughly disgusted to see the footage on TV of the Taliban thrashing a 17-year-old girl, more so since I belong to the same province. It's a sick place we live in today, sick and confused. We have at home barbaric men who, in the name of Islam, commit such heinous crimes. Even in states such as Saudi Arabia where women have to live by stringent rules, never has such a crime been committed. Shame on our government for letting this happen.

After watching the gory scenes of the barbaric Taliban whipping a girl in public in Swat, I only have to congratulate the NWFP government that finally it has achieved 'true peace' by surrendering Swat to the Stone Age. Also, our strategists and agencies must be feeling really proud today that their 'strategic assets' are really coming up well! At last, in utter desperation, one can only wish the Americans to launch drone attacks against these terrorists because our own government has virtually given in to the spectacle and has failed to protect the citizens; a primary duty of the state.

The video aired on Geo TV where the Taliban beat a 17-year-old girl with a whip is extremely disturbing. Even more worrying is the reason -- that she was seen with a man who was not her husband. The media did a very good job in airing the video and highlighting the extremism. Such extremism is more than enough and the government should take immediate action. We can't see more of this. If we still don't stand up against this, it won't be a surprise that the Taliban increase their power and influence, and eventually we will see this happening on the streets of Lahore or Islamabad soon.

I fail to understand the so-called rage and shock being expressed by the media and the public at large at the beating of a woman at the hands of the Taliban in Swat. We all are well aware of all these atrocities being committed in the name of religion. Do we need such explicit visuals to move our conscience? Day in and day out women are being raped, maimed, tortured and killed in the name of religion and honour. For us they are statistics until or unless we come face to face with these horrors. I can bet my life on it that despite the video proof of these three animals (can't call them humans!), they will get away scot-free. There will be lots of hue and cry, condemnations and calls for punishment but nothing will come out of it. We will forget and move on, so another day another woman will bear the brunt of honour and religion and life will go on in my beloved country. I request the chief justice of Pakistan to take suo motu notice of the lashing.

I just watched -- on Geo TV -- a shocking video of a 17-year-old girl, wearing a shuttle-cock burqa, lying flat and being whipped by religious extremists. As she was whipped, she would cry, and plead with her tormentors to let her free. This is the price we pay for enacting a 'peace agreement' in Swat. I am horrified.
