Five Pakistani cops killed in Dir raid

Thu, 02 Apr 2009 01:27:39 GMT

At least five policemen have been killed and two others sustained severe injuries when militants attacked a police van in northwestern Pakistan.
The security agents were reportedly on their routine patrolling in Shringal area of Dir Bala when unidentified armed men attacked the police van they were boarding, the Press TV correspondent reported. The attack resulted in the killing of five policemen and injuring two others.
The militants reportedly first opened fire on the police vehicle and then fired rockets.
The Pakistani police have launched a thorough investigation into the deadly incident as the motive behind it remains 'unclear'. No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.
Pakistan's lawless tribal areas have become a safe haven for pro-Taliban militants who fled the 2001 US-led invasion of Afghanistan and have regrouped to launch attacks on foreign troops across the border.
Much of the violence has been concentrated in northwest Pakistan.
