Buner people panicked by militants’ entry

BUNER: Reports about entry of around 100 militants from Swat valley to the district panicked people here Sunday and jirgas were held to discuss the matter.

Locals said that militants travelling in four vehicles arrived in Darra Gokand area. They reached in the area for a patch-up with the Shalbandai villagers, who shot dead several militants in the past, the militants were quoted as saying.

Later, area residents held a jirga at the district coordination officer’s office where they decided to make announcements via loudspeakers in Sultan Was, Pir Babat, Ghazi Khanai, Pirabai, Daggar Bajkata, Shalbandai and Umnor villages to stop further movement of militants.

Meanwhile, armed locals and police blockaded Bhangra area to stop the movement of militants, while officials said talks with the militants were in progress. A police official said militants were demanding the release of a militant commander namely Jamshed.

Later, another jirga was held in Salarzai tehsil to discuss the volatile situation. Sources said the jirga elders telephoned Malakand Division commissioner and Tehrik Nifaz Shariat-e-Muhammadi chief Maulana Sufi Muhammad to make it clear that the Buner residents would not let their soil be used for militancy and military operations. Those, who addressed the jirga, included Muhammad Rasool Khan advocate, Gul Bacha, Sher Wali and Muhammad Afzal Khan.
