Flogging of girl in Swat widely condemned

ISLAMABAD: Speaker National Assembly Dr Fehmida Mirza on Friday condemned the public flogging of a 17-year-old girl in Swat, terming it against Islamic principles.

In a statement issued here, she said Islam does not allow such punishments based on injustice and brutality without conducting proper interrogation and following the set procedure. The speaker said the government believes in the rights of women and would not allow anybody to carry out such activities contrary to the teachings of Islam.

Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Sumsam Ali Bukhari also expressed his dismay over the flogging of a woman in Swat and said it was an un-lslamic and shameful act. Talking to a TV channel, he said the Swat incident had in fact ridiculed the Islamic principles of justice and tarnished the image of the country.

PML-Q Secretary Information Tariq Azeem Khan termed the flogging of a girl by certain Taliban in Swat an un-Islamic, immoral and an unethical act. Talking to APP, Tariq Azeem said the perpetrators of this heinous crime were the enemies of Islam and Pakistan.

Awami National Party spokesman, Senator Zahid Khan, said flogging a woman in public was against the Islamic concept of justice, humanity and Pushtoonwali code. ANP leader and Senator Haji Adeel strongly condemned public flogging of a girl in Swat. Talking to a private TV channel, he said the ANP government in the NWFP will not allow anybody to create state within the state.

Our Lahore correspondent adds: The Aurat Foundation, in collaboration with the South Asia Partnership, Pakistan, the Violence Against Women Group and the Legislative Watch Group, protested against the lashing of a woman in public in Swat on Friday.

The participants of the protest, staged in front of the Lahore Press Club, were carrying placards and chanting slogans against the Talbanisation in the country. They expressed their anger and grief over the barbaric incident and demanded of the government and parliament to take action against the perpetrators.

Our Hyderabad correspondent adds: A large number of women and children here on Friday held a protest against the torture of a 17-year-old girl in Swat. Nazeer Qureshi of Sindhiani Tehreek led the protest outside the local press club. Activists of the ST and the Awami Tehreek also participated.

They called for punishing those involved in such barbaric acts and demanded of the government to provide immediate justice to the girl. They asked the government to take notice of the torture and protect the lives of other women living in Swat and other parts of the country.
